We are looking for volunteer mentors who are 18 and older. To be a mentor you need to have some understanding of Autism. It's important to understand that we are a neurodivergence affirming program - this means that we accept people as they are and believe that Autism is a difference in the way the brain processes information and not a problem that needs to be corrected or cured.
All of our volunteer mentors commit to giving of their time at no cost to the organization or the teens and young adults they support. The amount of time you commit is completely up to you, and will look different for every mentor. Meetings can be virtual, or in person in and around Bucks County (read the policies and procedures & code of conduct for more information related to meetings). This program is about connection and creating relationships for autistic teens and young adults who generally feel left out and different. To be a mentor means to make a decision to be an important part of someone else's life.
Safety for our autistic teens and young adults is our number one priority. In order to become a volunteer mentor, you will have to complete a thorough intake form, have an interview with the Executive Director or Assistant Director, have a background check and participate in training related to child safety, boundaries, and mandated reporting. You will be supported during your time as a mentor through 1:1 meetings with a program supervisor and mentor group meetings.
Can't commit to being a volunteer mentor, but you still want to help out? This non-profit is 100% volunteer run. We can always use people to help behind the scenes with marketing, mentor/mentee connecting, fundraising, event planning, etc. etc. etc. Let us know if you want to help out in this way!
Do you still have questions or want to find out more? We offer virtual informational meetings for people interested in learning more about being a volunteer mentor for Autism Unplugged.
Feel free to email us or chat to learn more about the program and how you can be a volunteer mentor and an incredible support to autistic teens and young adults!
